State Mining Corporation Limited (SMCL), established in 2014, is a government-owned enterprise under Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), the investment arm of the Royal Government of Bhutan. Tasked with developing and managing Bhutan’s mineral resources, SMCL focuses on sustainable mining practices to support national economic growth. The company’s operations span the mining and supply of key minerals such as coal, quartzite, dolomite, and gypsum, which serve various industries both domestically and internationally. SMCL operates with a commitment to environmental responsibility, applying innovative mining techniques that balance resource extraction with minimal ecological impact.

he government handed over the Khothakpa Gypsum Mines to SMCL for an interim period starting January 1, 2019, following the expiration of the previous lease.

Chunaikhola dolomite mine

SMCL prepared to take over the Chunaikhola dolomite mine in Phuntshopelri gewog, Samtse, following the cancellation of mining rights due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
