History of SMCLHonourable Prime Minister of Bhutan in his address on the State of the Tsa-Wa-Sum, 2014 highlighted that
the mining sector as one of the five jewels of the Bhutanese economy. Honourable Prime Minister stated that "the mining sector has immense potential to increase economic opportunities, increase jobs, and generate more revenue not just for the government but also our local communities.
He also stated, A Mineral Development Policy is under consideration by the government to provide strategic overview and direction to the mineral sector and to ensure that mining has minimum impact on the environment and local communities". In line with the above strategic direction envisaged by the Honourable Prime Minister, the government took the decision to form the State Mining Corporation with the objective to export minerals to Bangladesh and India.
The Company was therefore, incorporated on 31st December 2014. SMC shall operate based on the best practices of the industry; demonstrate transparent allocation of resources; use the cleanest mining technology; and responsive to the environmental impact of the business. The Company is also mandated to develop extensive human capital in the mining industry
